What is HERMES?

Troy University Communication Methods

The name HERMES was chosen to collectively refer to all electronic services used by the university to communicate with its constituents. Some of these services are regularly used to communicate directly with faculty, staff, and students (Trojan E-mail, Trojan Web Express) while others are only used in emergency situations (e2Campus, SOS Website, Network Authentication).

Directory Search

Faculty & Staff Contact Information

Contact information for Troy University employees is available in our online directory. Student information is not available. On the Trojan Website (trojan.troy.edu) the directory can be accessed via the search box located in the top, right area of each Web page, which will execute a last name search.

Enter the last name of an employee. Additional search criteria will be available on the results page.

Distribution Lists (DL)

E-mail Distribution Lists are used to send individual e-mail messages to several recipients at once. All users who receive the message are blind-copied. The e-mail system is able to send these messages via distribution lists much faster than if an individual attempted to do the same using a standard e-mail client. In many cases these lists are used to send a message to several hundred or several thousand users at the same time.

A university department may contact Information Technology to request the creation of a distribution list. Distribution lists can be restricted to only include departmental users, or they may include individuals based on specific criteria. University employees considering the creation of a distribution list are encouraged to contact the E-mail Administrator at the Information Technology department prior to submitting the request.

Emergency Text and E-mail Notifications

This system is used to provide urgent system notices to university faculty, staff, and students. A student may also sign up a parent to receive alerts. Alerts are delivered primarily via text messaging (SMS) though e-mail can also be selected as a delivery method.

The e2Campus system is only used to send emergency notifications such as weather alerts and building safety issues. Your information will not be shared with a third-party and you will not receive advertising as a result of subscribing to this service.

All current students, faculty, and staff are urged to subscribe to this service. Subscription may be canceled at any time. The service is free but text messaging charge, depending on your mobile plan, may apply.

Additional information about the e2Campus service is available on the SOS Website.

Network Authentication

Access at TROY Locations

Network access at Troy University locations is restricted to current students, faculty, and staff. In order to access a Troy University network these individuals are required to login using their university e-mail username and password. Use of network authentication helps protect all users by preventing computers infected with malware from joining the network. It also ensures that only approved individuals have access to network services.

The system can also be used to send emergency information and security notices to logged in users.
